Well, ok, more than a moment. Just barely.

Last night around 9:30 I get a phone call from the guy who does Celebrate Recovery. It turns out that an unfortunate set of scheduling conflicts had left all the possible worship leaders unavailable. One of my fellow praise team members sold me out. She said “Heath can play AND sing!” (I will have my revenge.) I stayed up late getting a set together, picking out what key to play everything in and getting my head wrapped around arrangements.

First off, the last time I sang into a microphone in front of anyone was about 14 years ago, before my voice changed. I had no intention of changing that now.

My bass player didn’t show, the drummer on schedule came down with a stomach bug and one of the singers had a class run late (to be noted, that i’m not upset with any of them. Things happen). Oh, and the powerpoint didn’t work. So it’s me, a fill-in drummer (who did fine) and 2 singers and no lyrics on the screens in a room of people who don’t really know these songs.

I don’t really know how it went, since I was on stage and it’s hard to tell from up there but response seemed ok for what it was. Ann says it went well, but I have a hard time convincing myself that her bias doesn’t play into it.

So there it is. My first and last experience as a worship leader-y person. I”ll be happy to stand in the shadows and play my bass from now on. I was perfectly content there before, and even moreso now.
